My Navy Background

I first enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1967. My basic training took place at the Recruit Training Center in San Diego, Company 67-626, an Allstate Company from Arizona. The Company Commander was Carl L. Handcock.

In January of 1968 I received orders to VT-22, a training Squadron for Pilots in Kingsville, TX. I spent about 6 months in the 'Line' Division as a Plane Captain before before being transferred to the Airframes Shop where I became an Aviation Structural Mechanic (AMS). Eventually I made it to the Paint Shop where I spent my last year in Kingsville. I then received orders to the USS Bon Homme Richard (CVA 31). For some mysterious reason known only to some nameless person in BUPERS I received new orders a month later to VS-33, an Anti-Submarine Squadron based on NAS North Island. I went on one Westpac Cruise with them on the USS Ticonderoga (CVS-14). I was Honorably Discharged from Active Duty as an AMS-3 (E-5) in August of 1971.

My service with the U.S. Navy didn't end there, in 1982 I decided I enlisted in the Reserves as a Photographer. I spent four years flying to San Diego for my weekend 'Drills'. I was assigned to AVU-Det 185 at NAS Mirimar. I was Honorably Discharged from the Reserves as a PH-2 (E-5) in
in 1986.

I'd like to hear from anyone who served in the above units, contact me at the e-mail address' below.

Thanks,

Chuck Sloan
